V.4. Gross Profits of Traders, Good and Bad Days, by Age and Gender in Kenya Shillings, 1987-1988

The relationship of land use rights to profit levels among traders ties together this section and the preceding one and makes a fitting ending to both. We have already seen that men with access to land had more than women did on the average, although more men were completely landless than women (87.6% versus 61.2%). Table V.5 shows that for men, in particular, a strong positive relationship existed between land access and trading profits. The association is uneven, but those with access to more land did tend to make more profits trading, especially men. They were also likely to have more starting capital. For women, however, profits fell somewhat when access to land rose above eight acres, probably because they put in more work farming. This evidence indicates strong differentiation among men traders but only weak differences among women traders; virtually all the statistical differences between women and men were significant at the .00 level.48
